John Hector was born in Aberdeen in 1845 and was a United Free Church of Scotland missionary in Calcutta, India. He was educated at the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Free Church College. In 1871, he was ordained for foreign mission service and was appointed to Calcutta. He married Margaret Pittendrigh in 1876 and became the pricipal of Duff College, Calcutta, in 1887.
